PLIDA Beginner Italian Class A1.1 (In-Person)

In this introductory course, students will learn fundamental phonetic, grammatical, and lexical structures through conversations and simple dialogues. This course teaches students to greet formally and informally, introduce themselves, share and request contact information, discuss their age and feelings, and communicate in a classroom setting. They will learn to start conversations, introduce others, apologize, thank people, make reservations, order food, and ask for the bill. Additionally, students will discuss hobbies, likes and dislikes, express agreement and disagreement, count to 100, and ask and answer questions about the time.

Building upon the foundation provided by level 101, students in this course will further develop their linguistic competency in comprehension, writing, reading and oral communication. The course covers various aspects of communication and interaction in Italian, such as describing a house, daily life, talking about the weather, discussing your weekend and vacation. In addition to language skills, the course also focuses on Italian culture.

This course completes level A1 of language proficiency and continues to emphasize the improvement of oral comprehension, writing, reading and oral communication. The course covers various aspects of communication and interaction in Italian, such as going shopping, buying groceries, and asking politely for what they need, describing stores, talking about their work, a typical workday, and their daily routine, describing and talking about their family. In addition to language skills, the course also focuses on Italian culture.

PLIDA Elementary Italian Class A2.2 (In-Person)

This course builds on students’ mastery of verb tenses, vocabulary, and communicative functions at the elementary level, while also placing a strong emphasis on Italian culture alongside language instruction. Students will learn to discuss vacations in present and past tenses, inquire about information and prices, and react to situations. They will also talk about food preferences, grocery shopping, giving suggestions, and expressing opinions. Furthermore, the course includes discussions on health, reporting and describing symptoms, offering advice, and talking about one's relationship with sports.

The course focuses on exchanging information accurately and confidently about events, dreams, and hopes, and explaining opinions and plans. Additionally, students will learn to handle various situations while traveling in Italy.

PLIDA Upper Intermediate Italian Class B2.2 (online)

This upper-intermediate course is intended for students who have completed Italian B2.1 or possess an equivalent level of proficiency. It aims to further strengthen linguistic and communicative skills, preparing students for more sophisticated and structured interactions in Italian. The course offers an in-depth exploration of the thematic areas introduced in PLIDA B2.1—such as society, history, geography, and art—while fostering continued development in the four language skills (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Cultural discussions and materials will deepen students’ understanding of key aspects of contemporary Italy.

Students will learn to express emotions, describe themselves and others both physically and in terms of personality, and engage in conversations that involve expressing preferences, opinions, and irony. Through discussions on film and visual culture, students will practice summarizing plots, reviewing and critiquing movies, and identifying cinematic genres. They will also develop the skills to conduct interviews, narrate with attention to detail, describe images effectively, and structure their speech coherently—from introduction to conclusion—while expressing agreement, disagreement, or softening previous statements.

PLIDA Upper Intermediate Italian Class B2.3 (In-Person)

This upper-intermediate course is intended for students who have completed Italian B2.2 or possess an equivalent level of proficiency. It aims to further strengthen linguistic and communicative skills, preparing students for more sophisticated and structured interactions in Italian. The course offers an in-depth exploration of the thematic areas introduced in PLIDA B2.2—such as society, history, geography, and art—while fostering continued development in the four language skills (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Cultural discussions and materials will deepen students’ understanding of key aspects of contemporary Italy.

Students will explore sustainable Italy while developing their ability to communicate thoughtfully and effectively in Italian. They will learn how to express opinions, evaluations, doubts, and concerns—especially in relation to environmental issues—as well as how to make proposals and express wishes. Students will also practice explaining ideas clearly, giving compliments, asking for and offering advice, and discussing cultural events in a detailed and informed way. In addition, they will develop their ability to conduct interviews, challenge commonly held opinions, clarify and refine points, and engage in structured discussions, further strengthening both their linguistic competence and critical thinking skills.

This course completes level B1 of language proficiency and is for students who have completed Italian B1.2 or have an equivalent level. It refines language skills, expands vocabulary, and deepens comprehension of written and spoken Italian while exploring cultural perspectives. Students will practice narrating events, expressing incredulity, asking indirect questions, and seeking or providing information. The course also covers reporting speech, highlighting places, expressing disagreement or disappointment, using irony, and moderating discussions. Additionally, it includes making past hypotheses and reflecting on language learning.
